DESCRIPTION

The skin is dry and rough, together with varying degrees of scaling.
Severe forms are mainly inherited, e.g. ichthyosis.
Milder forms (xeroderma), seen as dryness with only slight scaling are common in the elderly and some chronic conditions, e.g. HIV disease, malignancies and atopic eczema.

MEDICINE TREATMENT

  • Avoid soap, use soap substitutes e.g.
  • Aqueous cream (UEA)
    • Rub on skin, before rinsing off completely.
    • Aqueous cream should not be used as an emollient.
  • Emollient e.g.
  • Emulsifying ointment (UE)
